Neepa Sutar, a young employee of the Electricity Department, is suffering from the problem of chapped lips even during extreme heat. He said that he did not suffer from such a problem even in winter. "If not taken care of, lips (lip) crack in winter and I am careful about that. But even in summer, I never thought that I would have such a problem with my lips in this extreme heat," he told BBC Bangla. He said, "If you don't give cosmetics or Vaseline, your lips are cracking like winter." For the past few days, many people are writing about such experiences with cracked lips on Facebook.
A person named Mim Souda wrote, "I have seen many things in life, the only thing left was to see chapped lips in this summer! I saw this too this time!”
One named Lamiya Islam wrote, “I have never seen such a strange form of nature before. In the heat, the breath rises, but the body does not sweat like that. On the contrary, on this hot day, the lips are cracking, the skin is rising.
Again, the problem is not only happening to girls. Many boys also say that they carry lip balm in their pockets in winter to avoid the pain of chapped lips.
University teacher Sanjay Basak says, “For me this is a very unique experience, it has never happened before. Four or five days ago, the skin of the lower lip is rising, I thought it was a skin disease, but later I saw that there are many articles about it. It's never happened before, even this time the sweat is less in the heat”.
But why are the lips cracked in the heat?
Professor Mustafa Zaman, a doctor at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, says that due to weather or climate change, winter is no longer like before and at the same time, the change in the characteristics of the seasons is also affecting the human body.
He told BBC Bangla that now it is very hot during fasting, due to which many people are suffering from dehydration.
"Because of the heat, some people's lips are chapped, and some people are constipated. Because the skin is drying out quickly."
He said, "Due to dryness, the skin's water content is rapidly decreasing. Lips are more affected because the skin on the outer side of the lips is very thin,”
Mr. Zaman said, those who observe fast, it can be more. Because from Sehri to Iftar, you have to abstain from food and drink for about 14 hours in this summer.
“But it's not a big problem. Normal effect of temperature. It can be avoided only if you are aware”.
Why are lips usually cracked?
The lip is more prone to cracking than the skin on the body, because it is basically a very thin layer of the skin's surface.
Therefore, if the humidity in the air is high in winter, the water content from the body decreases and then this layer of the skin is quickly damaged, i.e. dry and cracked.
“This layer of the lips we call the epidermis or outer layer. As it is thin, it is quickly affected by changes in temperature or humidity," said Professor Mustafa Zaman.
He said, "If the lips are slightly dry, many people try to moisten them with the tongue. But later, when the saliva dries up, the lips become drier and may crack."
He says, sometimes some medicines used in the treatment of high blood pressure, heart, kidney (Kidney) or cancer also take water out of the body and because of that many people's skin especially lips are affected.
Again, due to the location of the lips just below the nose, the lips become dry under the influence of the hot air coming out with the breath.
So what is the solution?
Doctors give some advice to prevent chapped lips. These are:
• Drink plenty of water
• Lip care
• Avoid strong sunlight and dust
• Eating balanced and nutritious food
• Use Vaseline if necessary (but doctors advise to be careful not to use anything with chemicals).
