Many are seen picking their teeth with toothpicks. Basically, khilal is used to remove food stuck in the gap of the teeth. Some people get so used to it that they don't get relief if they don't brush their teeth after eating. Although toothpicks may seem convenient, they are not a safe way to clean teeth. If you don't want to cause dental damage, you should follow the doctor's approved procedure instead.
The risk to the teeth of using a toothpick
* Inflammation of the gums may occur: Toothpicks may break and get stuck in the gums while brushing. Broken toothpicks can cause gum inflammation if removal is delayed. If you're not careful when pulling it out yourself, it can further damage the gum tissue and increase inflammation—which can be dangerous and unbearable, says Cherylyn Pezzullo, assistant professor at NYU College of Dentistry in New York. It will not be unstable if the toothpick is accidentally broken during Khilal. Stand in front of a mirror and take it out carefully or get someone to help you. If necessary, visit a dentist for safe extraction.
* May cause infection: The pointed part of the toothpick can be easily injured by accidentally sticking it in the gums or inside the mouth. Bacteria can cause infection in these open wounds. Also, even toothpicks can become infected with bacteria if they are not stored in a clean place. Besides, there are many bacteria in the mouth, among these harmful bacteria can suffer from infection. Bacteria can enter through open wounds and contaminate the blood. It is called septicemia - urgent treatment is required, otherwise life is at risk. Those who do not take care of their teeth regularly have more germs in their mouths. Studies have shown that if there is a problem in the teeth, the risk of various diseases in the body increases. For example, tooth and gum disease can spread bacteria into the bloodstream and damage heart valves.
* May interfere with dental treatment: People undergoing dental treatment or dental work (eg fillings and veneers) should avoid Khilal. Otherwise the treatment will not be as effective or the dental work will be damaged. Dr. Pezzullo said, 'If there is a problem or gap in the tooth during the dental restoration process, using a toothpick will make the situation worse. This will cause the dental work to loosen or decay.' Dental work materials (such as filling materials) are not as strong as natural teeth and can easily decay or break if worn.
What to use instead of a toothpick
Since picking with a toothpick can damage teeth and gums, dentist-approved methods should be used for cleaning teeth. These methods are safer and more effective than toothpicks. Dr. Pezzullo recommends these methods as alternatives to toothpicks: dental floss (especially waxed flat floss), plastic-handled floss sticks, and waterpicks.
A waterpik uses high pressure water to remove food particles and other particles from the teeth. He said that using soft floss or cleaning teeth with water pressure does not increase gum problems, gum tissue is not damaged and there is no risk of inflammation and infection.
